Actually Grant, I’m not sure how much more ethics reform is needed in Utah. Before the last election, what we witnessed was a political stunt to embarrass a good legislator and try to get him knocked out of the race before the election. Watch this YouTube video on Greg Hughes’ “October Surprise”. Watch this and you’ll be asking for stiff penalties against false accusers.

I wish I could remember a few more of the statistics from last night’s meeting but I remember Howard Stephenson said one reason Utah ranked poorly on a national ethics review was because many of the questions on the questionaire were answered N/A by Utah because we already had certain things implemented that made it a non-issue but that hurt our score. There’s a lot more to the public ethics story than is being told, but when you hear the other side of the story it’s a lot clearer the problem is being blown out of proportion for political gain.

Ethics reform is definitely needed, but this is not the way to do it. I hope our legistors are smart enough to figure that out.

Steve, there is no petition for an anti-ethics bill movement, but there is a petition at http://www.utahsrepublic.org to help restore basic constitutional principles. Please sign up there and get as many others to sign as you can.

This is scary, AND, considering the backgrounds of some of these people, they should know better.

There is no petition against it at this time, we just need to get the word out about this bill and what it will do.

The “gang of 12” is comprised of Republicans and Democrats and Robert, you may very well be right. Progressives aren’t bound to one party.

So I found this pretty interesting. At the very top of the bill it reads:

“Monies Appropriated in this Bill:
None”

and then in the second to last paragraph it reads:

“(7) The legislature adequately shall fund the salary of the executive director, additional staff, and operations of the commission with an annual appropriation. In order to assure the independence of the commission, this annual appropriation shall be no less than $472,000.”

Sooo… I guess technically it doesn’t directly appropriate funds, it just forces the legislature to do it, and that’s completely different.
